About the Workshop

The objective of the Academic Leadership Training (ALT) Workshop is to train the next generation of academic leaders by providing them with tools, connections and skills to be successful in advancing the teacher-scholar model among their faculties and colleagues. Academic leaders are research center directors, department heads, college deans, etc. Participants in the workshop are expected to be researchers in the fields of chemistry, physics or astrophysics, broadly defined.

The two-day workshop will take place at Marvel Hall, ACS Headquarters in Washington D.C. The main workshop will start on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at 3:00 pm. Sessions will conclude at 4:00PM on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. Workshop attendees will be staying at the conference hotel (to be confirmed).

Priority will be given to mid-career professors who have been successful teacher-scholars and demonstrate an interest in leadership positions. We can accommodate up to 36 participants.

Registration Costs

The registration fee of $1,000 discounted from $2250 due to generous sponsorships covers the 360-degree feedback exercise, meals and 2 nights lodging at the conference hotel, and other conference materials. All attendees (or preferably their departments) are asked to pay for travel to/from the workshop.

Most universities have funds to cover the costs of faculty development workshops such as this one. You should ask your Department Chair, Dean or Provost's Office about such funding. We will have a limited number of waivers to offer to defray the costs for faculty who are unable to identify institutional funding to cover the workshop.

  • Participants will receive a $500 refund if they provide cancellation notice after they have begun the 360-degre feedback, and at least 4 weeks in advance of the workshop.
  • Participants will receive a $250 refund if they provide cancellation notice after they have begun the 360-degree feedback, and at least 2 weeks in advance of the workshop.
