ALT Scope

The ALT workshop is structured to aid mid-career faculty develop efficient research and training programs. Workshop leaders are all successful faculty members who actively balance their research and teaching. 

360-Degree Leadership

As part of the ALT workshop, participants will have the opportunity to undergo a 360-degree feedback exercise, providing information about their leadership skills from their reports, their peers and their supervisors. This exercise also provides information about the skills that could be strengthened in order to improve base leadership abilities.

The 360-degree feedback exercise is intended to help you gauge your leadership skills along various directions:

  1. Leading-up: Influencing your leader by taking responsibilities that lighten your leader's role and adjusting to your role depending on the situation.
     
  2. Leading-across: Maintain and create a positive atmosphere amongst your peers by being supportive and aid in their success.
     
  3. Leading-down: Recognize the potential and be an effective role model towards your subordinates by being encouraging and imparting vision towards their career development.

Practical Tools for Academic Leaders

The bulk of the ALT workshop will emphasize practical experiences encountered by experienced academic leaders and scenarios.  

Examples include:

  1. Engaging and motivating colleagues
  2. Conflict resolution
  3. Managing up and managing down
  4. Managing people and budgets
  5. Time-management
  6. Inclusive excellence and harassment cases
  7. Friend raising and stewardship
